Comment spam is increasingly becoming a menace these days. Thanks god there is Akismet to filter out spams from the genuine comments. But still Akismet is not 100% accurate and can mark some genuine comments as spam. And if you care enough to manuaaly check the Akismet spams before deleting it, it becomes a headache.
Here comes the role of Wordpress CAPTCHA plugins. These plugins add CAPTCHA images to your post comments form, thus helping you to prevent comment spam on your blog.
There are many CAPTCHA plugins for Wordpress available. But I think re-CAPTCHA is a lot better than others. It also provides the hidemail service with the same plugin. This hidemail prevents the display of email address of your blog users to spam bots, thus reducing the email-spam.
You can download the plugin here.
Other CAPTCHA plugins available for Wordpress are -
- Raz-Captcha
- Simple CAPTCHA
- WP Captcha-Free
- CAPTCHA-Godfather
- Security Captcha
- SI CAPTCHA for Wordpress
- Geo Captcha
- wp-num-captcha
- BotProof Captcha 2.0
- Really Simple CAPTCHA

This is a great resource. As spammers get more and more diligent in scanning blogs this becomes more and more necessary.

Hi there,
I just installed the reCAPTCHA plugin for WordPress yesterday but already a spam comment got into my blog – Akismet caught it and listed it as spam.
I’ve just read that reCAPTCHA has been hacked so it’s effectively of no use. I find it yet another barrier to visitors leaving comments – which all bloggers want to encourage, so for now I’ve disabled it.
Any ideas what to try next?

I’ve no idea….though I would personally like to stay with recaptcha.
